Devotion 365 - Forgive

Maybe someone has wronged you, and you find that you are having a hard time letting bygones be bygones. Remember, forgiveness is never easy, but is always necessary. Our God is a God of forgiveness (see Daniel 9:9), and He expects His people to be forgivers too (see Matthew 6:14—15). Forgiveness does not mean we are denying that we were wronged, or that we are excusing the wrong that was committed. But forgiveness is the way God wants us to deal with being wronged. Forgiveness does not mean that all the consequences go away from the wrong that was committed, either. To forgive basically means that a person is pardoned with no strings attached.
What is our motivation to forgive others? We forgive for love's sake. Love demands that we forgive others as "[love] keeps no record of being wronged" (1 Corinthians 13:5 NLT). The love of God toward us is a demonstration of forgiveness and serves as a model of forgiveness for us to follow, "forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). Love also continues to forgive, which means there is no limit to the number of times we are to forgive someone (see Matthew 18:21—22).
Forgiveness is a choice that we make to love someone as God has loved us. Forgiveness believes, "I am forgiven, so I should be forgiving." When we have been wronged, being unforgiving is easy. But for love's sake, we must let go of that wrong and choose to embrace forgiveness. To forgive someone is never easy, but is necessary (see Mark 11:26).

Psalm 13:5New Living Translation (NLT)

But I trust in your unfailing love.

    I will rejoice because you have rescued me.

In Christ Alone

"In Christ Alone"

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

Psalm 34:17-18

The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help.
    He rescues them from all their troubles.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;

    he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
