The AA Excuse - still a coping skill for your stress in life

Friday, April 27, 2012

I chatted with an old friend last night that is in the process of recovering from a heroin addiction, which basically took everything from him - family, his job, his children, what was left of his adult life and pride.

He asked me how long I have been sober with alcohol.

I advised I am working on five years. He thought I was selfish to others not going to “AA Meetings”, and that I lived in a false sobriety since I assume I am “cured” of the disease.

I advised that I am aware that if I ever picked up that first drink, I would be right back to drinking.

However, that statement wasn’t good enough for him.

People in general, on a great average, have crutches that they use to cope with certain setbacks, downfalls, and even anxious personalities.

For my life, instead of using another crutch where I can blame my shortcomings with a “disease”, or “circumstance”, I chose to try different things to rejoin society without being angry at the world for my poor choices.

As I slept last night, I thought about people, trials and tribulations they go though, based on choice, and non choice.

An old friend of mine was born with birth defects. She had to go through stares, ridicule, low self esteem, and challenges that one child/teen/adult should not have to go through. And yet she didn’t sit on disability, didn’t feel sorry for herself, and crawl into a hole. She was a mom, a wife, a daughter, hard worker from the time she was 16. She chose not to let her disability to be a crutch. I believe her parents, especially her father did not coddle her into succumbing to the drama around her, and pushed her to overcome.

Triumph. Magic Power from the Band Triumph will always be her song.

My mother had breast cancer. She did not just weep and give in. In fact, she made it very clear that she only had a short time to give this issue any energy, and wants it over with. She’s been Cancer free for seven years.

As for my drinking, I was aware that it was my choice, and my coping skill that caused me to pick up the bottle, blame others for why I had to work so hard, while other women got to be lazy soccer moms and allow the spouse to support them.

I spent decades with a grudge. Who held a gun to my head to pick up the bottle? Or did I pick up the bottle because that was my coping skill by choice?

One day, I decided that not only drinking was a poor choice, but it solved nothing. It hurt my health, it hurt my family, it hurt my suburban when I hit the tree. But the stress that caused me to drink was always there in the morning, afternoon, and the want to cope all over again. I also wanted to be a better role model to my daughter.

How can I teach coping skills when I can’t cope?

I chose my new coping skill. Family.

Now, I could have gone the other route. I could have gone to meetings, blamed the disease that ran in the family, and talked about my powerlessness over alcohol.

I could have talked about whom I hurt, moral inventory, but all the meetings in the world won’t change the challenges that I face every day.

Did I want my daughter to see that I was not only powerless, but I had to choose another unhealthy and non-productive way to deal with my stress?

No.

Will my friend just continue to blame his unemployment, not supporting of his boys, no income, on the disease? When will it end? When does one grow up? I mean, at 39, there are options. Powerless over the drug, doesn’t mean powerless over goals, and your life after drugs and alcohol! I find it morbid to sit in a room and focus on the problems, and results of drugs/alcohol and the price they paid.

We can choose a healthy alternative, which gives back to your family, or whatever healthy coping skill you choose instead. I believe programs like intervention, AA, and other support groups are essential for those that do not realize that they choose that path.

But when do you stop blaming “Dis-Ease”?

When you have a bigger goal.

Is your goal to be a better role model to your children? Is your goal to have a better garden in your backyard? Is your goal to eat and live a healthier lifestyle? Is your goal to spend more time with your family? Is your goal to give back to the people that supported you during your selfish phase, and help them with their daily overstress? Do you go over to your elderly parent’s house, and roll down the trash bins because they just shouldn’t anymore?

If you made it this far reading, I want to state that I know that I enjoyed the coping skill of drinking. It was a fast drunk, and very fast “numb” --- Does that make me have the alcoholic dis ease?? Or is that the quickest and easiest coping skill that was my first choice?

What is your coping skills? Anger? Running away? Drinking? Drugs? Partying? Gambling? Shopping? Player? Whore monger? Or seeking excitement 24/7?

Everyone has their own path, way, life. I, KIMMY, didn’t want to just keep blaming others and situations for destroying my body and mind.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Review 1973

Thursday, April 26, 2012

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon. I wanted to share with you, the initial review of this album back in 1973. It's funny that Great Gig in the Sky is one of the most haunting songs today, when this writer thought it should be shortened!

May 24, 1973

One of Britain's most successful and long lived avant-garde rock bands, Pink Floyd emerged relatively unsullied from the mire of mid-Sixties British psychedelic music as early experimenters with outer space concepts. Although that phase of the band's development was of short duration, Pink Floyd have from that time been the pop scene's preeminent techno-rockers: four musicians with a command of electronic instruments who wield an arsenal of sound effects with authority and finesse. While Pink Floyd's albums were hardly hot tickets in the shops, they began to attract an enormous following through their US tours. They have more recently developed a musical style capable of sustaining their dazzling and potentially overwhelming sonic wizardry.

The Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd's ninth album and is a single extended piece rather than, a collection of songs. It seems to deal primarily with the fleetingness and depravity of human life, hardly the commonplace subject matter of rock. "Time" ("The time is gone the song is over"), "Money" ("Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie"). And "Us And Them" ("Forward he cried from the rear") might be viewed as the keys to understanding the meaning (if indeed there is any definite meaning) of The Dark Side of the Moon.

Even though this is a concept album, a number of the cuts can stand on their own. "Time" is a fine country-tinged rocker with a powerful guitar solo by David Gilmour and "Money" is broadly and satirically played with appropriately raunchy sax playing by Dick Parry, who also contributes a wonderfully-stated, breathy solo to "Us And Them." The non-vocal "On The Run" is a standout with footsteps racing from side to side successfully eluding any number of odd malevolent rumbles and explosions only to be killed off by the clock's ticking that leads into "Time." Throughout the album the band lays down a solid framework which they embellish with synthesizers, sound effects and spoken voice tapes. The sound is lush and multi-layered while remaining clear and well-structured.
There are a few weak spots. David Gilmour's vocals are sometimes weak and lackluster and "The Great Gig in the Sky" (which closes the first side) probably could have been shortened or dispensed with, but these are really minor quibbles. The Dark Side of the Moon is a fine album with a textural and conceptual richness that not only invites, but demands involvement. There is a certain grandeur here that exceeds mere musical melodramatics and is rarely attempted in rock. The Dark Side of the Moon has flash-the true flash that comes from the excellence of a superb performance.

Sunday April Calm

It is a beautiful calm day with grey skies, beautiful breeze, the windows opened, and a wonderful rain last night to refresh the earth. Allowing the earth to refresh me as well.

Sharing a poem

A Refreshing Rain - David Harris 28 April 2008

A refreshing rain fell from heaven
to wash away what marred the land.
To feed the soil
and give new growth a drink.

A refreshing rain
to cleanse the air
of any impurities there,
this refreshing rain from heaven fell.

Manner of Endurance

Saturday, April 7, 2012

"The manner in which one endures what must be endured is more important than the thing that must be endured." - Dean Acheson

Being ill, has really shed so much light on myself, my reactions to situations. There was a point that I wanted to just curl up, and sleep forever. What was MY manner of endurance? Am I even alive, or did I die, and this pain is my penance? The negative thoughts only made the pain and the stress worse.

As I finally started to feel just a little better, it was decided by myself, and my family that I just had to do whatever it takes minute by minute to feel better.

Today, I wondered how to share this with my readers, without pointing fingers, making someone this this post is about them. I see others around me, as I did, choose the unhealthy response to situations in their own life. Whether we blame a health issue, or circumstances in or out of our control, we still CHOOSE our Manner of Endurance.

Forrest Gump's Enduring Run, and this photo shows where he stopped.  He didn't have to. He could have gone on, or do what he did, go back. It's a great testament,  because we might not be aware when the lesson or trial we are going through will end.

Even though it is almost time for the finale episode, I am still laughing from last weeks episode. There have been a lot of ends that were somewhat tied up, and now it seems as though there are going to be a few more to tie off.

We still need to find out what is going to happen to Dickie Bennett. How are all of the different things that Quarles got himself into going to play out and will it be in his favor or not. Also what is going to happen with the character of Limehouse?

There is a lot of different things that we need to see and this week is sure to bring that!! We start out at Audrey’s ...

Weakness - The only useful Quality

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

In Tao the only motion is returning;

The only useful quality, weakness.

For though all creatures under heaven are the products of Being,

Being itself is the product of Not-being.

"He gives and gives, without condition, offering his treasures to everyone." Tao Te Ching
